If you were to look up the statistics on drug abuse in America, it is scary. In 2012, it’s estimated that 23.9 million Americans aged 12 or older (or 9.2 percent of the population) had used an illicit drug or abused a psychotherapeutic medication (such as a pain reliever, stimulant, or tranquilizer) in the past month. In actuality, this increase mostly reflects a recent rise in the use of the most commonly consumed illicit drug, marijuana. That’s why it’s important for business’s to initiate a drug testing policy. The longer we wait to take a stand against drug abuse, the more of a chance we will have of an accident on the job. That’s one of the worst fears of any employer to have to weigh on their mind every minute of every day. You see, drug testing not only will save you money, but it will also give you peace of mind in the long run.
What does it mean to “drug test”? Well, let’s break it down for you. Drug testing, itself, is the evaluation of urine, blood, hair, or other types of biological sample to determine if the subject has been using any drugs. In this case, we will be talking about urine drug testing and how using the “cup” method can help your business not only save money, but also the lives of your employees. We, at Rapid Detect, Inc, sell 6 different drug test cups, each with their own special characteristics and perks that will be explained in detail throughout this article. These drug test cups are the:
- E-Z Integrated Split Key Cups
- iCup Drug Screen Cups
- Noble Split Specimen Cups
- Noble One Step Multi-panel Cups
- Noble ToxCup
With prescription drug abuse reported to be a growing problem in the U.S., it’s common for many business’s and organizations to do a little “precautionary” testing so they can prevent any impact that can arise from drug abuse and not lower productivity in the workplace. Some of the most common situations where you’ll find a good chance that drug testing is involved are:
- Pre-employment or random workplace
- College or professional athletes
- Post-accident drug testing
- Safety-related jobs (if an employee’s job could lead to safety issues if judgment or physical ability were impaired)
There are too many circumstances to mention on here that may lead to drug testing. If you notice, more and more business’s are asking their potential hires to be tested before (if not immediately after) filling out a job application or handing in their resume. Some people that are very qualified for the position never make it to the interview process because they don’t pass their drug test. That’s really sad too, not on the part of the business, but the fact that someone would who might have been a perfect match for what that company needed is throwing away their career over some junk. These companies take safety seriously. That’s why it’s often done when applying for employment, especially for positions that may involve federal transportation, airline industries, railways, and other workplaces where public safety is of the utmost importance.
If you’re a business that is considering implementing a drug abuse policy, rest assured there are a number of different bodily specimens that can be tested to detect if a person has recent drug use. However, you should check your state laws to verify which types of tests can be used. Seeing that urine is the most commonly used specimen for illicit drugs (per SAMHSA’s guidelines), it’s important to note that a positive urine test does not necessarily mean a person was under the influence of drugs at the time of the test. Rather, it detects and measures the use of a particular drug within the previous few days. Results of a urine test only show the presence or absence of drug metabolites (drug residues that remain in the body for some time after the effects of a drug have worn off) in a person’s urine.
If you need to know how long a drug stays in a person’s body system, you can look at the chart on our website. Knowing how long a drug remains could help you in deciding which urine drug test cup is right for you. One thing you should keep in mind is that not all drug test urine cups are all the same. Like we mentioned earlier, we offer our customers six different urine drug testing cups, each with their own manufacturing characteristics. Some of our drug test cups come with Adulterants (AD) while others are CLIA Waived. As defined by CLIA, waived tests are “simple laboratory examinations and procedures that have an insignificant risk of an erroneous result.” The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the agency that determines the criteria for tests being simple with a low risk of error and approves manufacturer’s applications for the test system waiver.

DrugCheck NxStep Cup – is easy to use, on-site drug screen that delivers quick results with convenience and accuracy. This cup is a rapid, qualitative immunoassay for the detection of 5, 10, 12, or 14 drugs of abuse using SAMHSA cutoff levels. The 5, 10, & 12 panels have the option to include alcohol testing to detect the presence of alcohol in urine greater than 0.04%. The tests are designed to obtain a visual, semi-quantitative result and are intended for professional use only. It comes with a re-sealable lid and a wider more “female-friendly” opening. With this test, there is no handling, manipulation, tipping, tilting, or instrumentation of any kind to activate the test. Probably the most distinguishing factor about the DrugCheck NxStep Onsite test cup that sets it apart from the others is the fact it’s made in the USA Operating this test is simple:
- Remove the test cup from the sealed pouch and write donor name or ID on the cup in the section provided.
- Hand the cup to the individual being tested.
- Have the donor ensure the sample in the cup is above the minimum level of 30mL.
- Return the cup immediately to the collector/administrator giving the test.
- At that time, the administrator will check the temperature strip (normal range from 90° to 100°F or 32° to 38°C) and observe specimen for foreign material and/or discoloration
- Remove the tear-off label on the front of the cup (if available, alcohol test can be read after 2 minutes).
- After at least 5 minutes, you can read the results of the test, but do not interpret the results after 10 minutes.
- Again, tighten the lid as far as it will turn before applying security seal, and have donor and test administrator both sign and date seal, as well as initial and date the label.

As a universal tip, in the rare case if you don’t see a line in the Control region (C), then you must discard that test and start again with another one. If you get a faint line in the Test region (T), that still counts as a negative for that particular drug. However, it is possible to get a negative result even though the person took drugs. Some reasons why this might happen are:
- the urine sample was collected at the wrong time, It was collected before the drug got into the urine, or after it was no longer in the urine
- the person took a drug other than the one tested for in this test. (i.e. they might have taken LSD when this test is for drugs of abuse other than LSD).
Anyone of these tests would be a great asset to your drug testing policy. No matter what field or industry you are in, testing for drugs of abuse should be a serious issue. Even if your employees don’t have a problem staying clean, it’s good that you keep them tested on a regular basis so that your clients will know you take your product, goods, or service serious enough to earn their business. Depending on the type of business you run and insurance coverage, you might get reimbursed for your expenses! If you qualify, any product that is CLIA Waived could be covered. So where you work in a Doctor’s office, a construction company, or security personnel, your company can always benefit from drug testing.
