In some areas, increased drug use has made it difficult for employers to fill open positions. Even so, the return on investment of ensuring that your employers are sober makes drug testing worth it.
Impairment Impacts Work
Some employers are reticent to test for drugs because they feel it is not their place to dictate what their employees do off the clock. But testing for drugs isn’t only, or even primarily, about taking a moral stance. For instance, workers who use narcotics are more likely to report late for work or to be unreliable.
Additionally, for jobs that require operating heavy machinery, intoxication can be extremely dangerous. If an accident happens, the employer could be held liable. This can lead to increased spending on insurance claims and premiums.

Urine drug tests are likely the most common type of drug tests used by employers. Recent developments in technology have made urine tests one of the most accurate options available. This is because the chemicals produced when your body metabolizes most substances pass through your urine.
In fact, urine tests are currently the only type of drug test accepted for federally mandated drug tests. It is also considered the standard for determining whether an individual is currently using a controlled substance. For a urine test, the controlled substance must have enough time to metabolize before it passes through the system. For a hair follicle test, the hair must have enough time to grow with traces of the substance. With saliva, however, the substance will be immediately detectable.
Also, unlike with a urine test, a saliva test can be collected under the direct supervision of the employer. This decreases the employee’s ability to tamper with the test. Also, a saliva test can be performed right on site of the workplace, making it a more convenient option.
That said, a saliva test is not necessarily a good choice for testing continued drug use. This is because drugs like marijuana are usually undetectable with a saliva test as few as 3 days after smoking. If an employee is aware of a scheduled test, they can simply abstain for a week prior to pass it.
Hair Follicle Drug Tests
Testing an employee’s hair follicle is another way to check for drug use. One of the best features of hair follicle testing is that it has the longest window of detection, with up to a 90-day window of drug use history. To get the best results, the sample should include hair follicles from close to the scalp, as these are more likely to contain traces of drugs.
So, while it may not be able to detect recent drug use, it will be harder for employees to pass the test simply by not using for a few days. Because of the longer detection window, hair testing yields nearly twice as many positives as other options.
Also, as with saliva testing, a hair follicle test can be collected under direct supervision without invading privacy. This limits the employee’s ability to tamper with the test sample by adding adulterating substances.
One problem with hair testing is that not all employees have enough hair to provide a sample. This is because most hair drug test kits require 100-120 strands of hair taken from close to the scalp. Employees with male pattern baldness and shaved heads might not be able to provide this.
