What Is a 7 Panel Drug Test and Why Does Your Business Need It?

what is a 7 panel drug test

In the world of commercial drug testing, there are many different products, processes and procedures.

With such a variety to choose from, it’s important to know the way that each one works. If you’ve decided (or you’re required) to conduct drug tests at your organization, you may be researching panel-based tests.

Beyond the standard 5 panel drug test, you can also find other options ranging from a 1 panel test to a 14 panel test. Today, we’re taking a closer look at one that falls right in the middle: the 7 panel drug test.

What is a 7 panel drug test? Read on to discover how this test works, what it measures, and how you can order one today.

What is Panel Drug Testing?

Before we dive into the specific numbers, let’s briefly discuss what panel testing entails in the first place.

In short, each specific drug tested equals one panel. This means a 5 panel test will test for the presence of five substances, a 7 panel test will test for seven substances, and so forth.

The panel itself refers to the slender plastic covers located on the test. Inside of each one, you’ll find a test strip or a row of strips that will chemically react to the specimen in question, yielding a “yes” or “no” result, or a “positive” or “negative” one.

One of the most common panel tests is the 5 Panel Drug Test.

Usually, this type of test is used to examine a urine specimen for traces of the following five substances, as well as their metabolites:

  • Amphetamine (AMP)
  • Cocaine (COC)
  • Marijuana (THC)
  • Methamphetamine (mAMP)
  • Opiates (OPI)

Yet, this is far from your only option. If you want to test for more substances, you can find higher-panel tests that accommodate a larger range. This is where the 7 panel drug test comes in.

What is a 7 Panel Drug Test?

As its name implies, a 7 panel drug test will test a specimen for the presence of seven different substances and metabolites. Most often, these specimens will come from either the tester’s urine, saliva or hair follicles.

While employers can customize their panels, there are certain combinations of drugs that are commonly grouped together. In all cases, this test increases the standard 5 panel test by testing for two additional substances.

7 Panel Hair Testing

When you purchase our HairConfirm Regular, you’ll find that this 7 panel test adds two more panels to cover Ecstasy and Phencyclidine. As such, the full list of substances measured by this test includes:

  • Amphetamine (AMP)
  • Cocaine (COC)
  • Marijuana (THC)
  • Methamphetamine (mAMP)
  • Opiates (OPI)
  • Ecstasy (MDMA)
  • Phencyclidine (PCP)

Ecstasy is also known as 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) or Molly. It’s an illegal psychoactive drug primarily used for recreational purposes, capable of altering users’ perceptions and physical capabilities.

Phencyclidine, or PCP, is commonly called “Angel Dust”. It’s a dangerous, mind-altering drug that can cause hallucinations, distort perceptions and lead to aggressive behavior.

Our hair follicle test is effective at detecting drug use up to 90 days prior. Nearly impossible to cheat on or taint, this is a go-to test that doesn’t deliver false positives, capable of detecting multiple uses over time.

The same substances listed above can also be tested using our iCup Drug Test 7 as well as our E-Z Key Cup 7 Panel

7 Panel Urine Testing

Our Rapid Detect 7 Panel Drug Test Cup is a method of urinalysis that detects all of the five substances included in our 5 panel test, as well as Benzodiazepines (BZO) and Oxycodone (OXY).

Benzodiazepines are a class of prescription drugs that are legally prescribed to help treat anxiety. They can also be effective treatments for insomnia and seizures. However, they can be extremely dangerous when abused, with side effects that mimic alcohol intoxication.

Oxycodone is a narcotic drug used to treat moderate to severe pain. It can also be habit-forming, leading to respiratory distress and other severe health conditions.

Our test cup is a one-step immunoassay device that uses competitive binding to deliver quick and accurate test results. With an accuracy of up to 99%, it’s also easy to read, thanks to a strong negative line intensity. Employers can issue this test as little as two to seven hours after suspected drug use and receive an accurate reading.

Why Do I Need a 7 Panel Drug Test?

Are you concerned that someone within your company might be abusing prescription drugs? What about illegal street drugs?

Seven panel drug tests are capable of detecting both. If any of these substances are in your employees’ system, it could negatively affect their capability to perform their job safely and well.

This is especially important in high-risk industries, such as the construction sector. In addition, healthcare professionals are also required to adhere to the rules of a drug-free workplace. If you have any reason to suspect that someone might be abusing the substances listed above, a 7 panel test is broad enough to capture many of the most dangerous and devastating ones.
